Downs Pipe and Bar Tongs are made especially for handling heavy pipe and round bar stock. They are also useful as a general utility tong for fast handling of steel shapes, bundled bar stock, heavy timbers, billets and bars, castings and steel turnings.
An outstanding feature of the Downs Pipe and Bar Tongs are the specially shaped arms which facilitate selecting and picking a pipe or bar out of a pile or off the floor. These uniquely designed arms can lift large or small bars and pipe directly off the floor surface by wedging under the item, thus eliminating the necessity to blocking under the item. Downs Pipe and Bar Tongs can easily be used by one man to handle a wide variety of material.
All sizes, except number 365 are provided with a semi-automatic latch hold open latch. With the latch locked in place, the tong remains open. Then the tong is lowered onto the load the latch then releases and the load can be lifted..
The minimum dimension given in the table is the minimum size the tong will clamp onto. Smaller material will just rest on the lower jaw and may slip out if not lifting from the center or sudden stops or starts.
